PEKUTHERM® Tool 5: Knowing When You’re Clean — A Diagnostic Tool

Clean the Machine. Establish the Baseline. Troubleshoot What Remains.

A recurring defect can send a plastics processor in several directions. Is it the resin? The temperature? The screw? The barrel? A dead spot? Degraded polymer? Contamination somewhere in the processing system?

Before troubleshooting becomes productive, one basic question needs an answer: Is the machine clean?

That is where PEKUTHERM® can become more than a cleaning material. By mechanically cleaning reachable internal surfaces and helping operators confirm that contamination is being removed, PEKUTHERM® can provide a cleaner baseline for determining what to investigate next. Troubleshooting Without a Clean Baseline Gets Complicated

Consider a recurring black-speck problem. An operator may adjust temperatures, slow production, change material, or run more resin through the machine. The defect may disappear temporarily and then return.

The problem is that several variables are being evaluated while one important variable remains uncertain:

Is degraded material or contamination still inside the equipment?

If that question has not been answered, troubleshooting becomes more difficult. A defect caused by retained contamination can look like a material problem. A processing adjustment may appear to solve the issue temporarily. Additional production resin may dilute the contamination enough for acceptable parts to return, but if material remains attached to internal surfaces, the underlying source may still be present.

Tool 5 Starts With One Question

Are We Clean Yet?

That sounds simple, but processors can consume significant amounts of valuable production resin trying to answer it.

After a purge or changeover, incoming material is often run until the previous color disappears, black specks stop appearing, contamination is no longer visible, parts become acceptable, or extrudate looks clean.

Every pound of production resin used only to verify cleanliness is material that is not becoming saleable product. PEKUTHERM® provides another way to approach that verification step.

PEKUTHERM® Makes the Cleaning Process Visible

PEKUTHERM® works through a self-adhering thermoelastic mechanical action. During processing, it forms a soft-scouring purge that physically works against contaminated metal surfaces. As contamination is removed, it is carried forward with the purge and exits the system. That creates a visible cleaning progression.

Early in the purge, operators may see:

PEKUTHERM® + previous material + contamination

As cleaning progresses:

Less contamination appears in the purge

Eventually:

The purge exits visibly cleaner

That transition gives the operator useful information about what is still being removed from the machine and helps answer an important question: Are we still cleaning—or are we ready to move forward?

Production Resin Should Make Product

This has been a recurring principle throughout the PEKUTHERM® Tool Series:

Use the purging compound to clean the machine. Use the production resin to make product.

That principle becomes especially important during cleanliness verification. If incoming resin is repeatedly run simply to determine whether residual contamination remains, the processor is using production material as a diagnostic consumable.

The real verification cost may include:

Production Resin + Scrap + Labor + Machine Time

A dedicated mechanical cleaning step can help reduce dependence on incoming production material for that job.

A Cleaner Machine Creates a Better Troubleshooting Baseline

Suppose PEKUTHERM® has mechanically cleaned the processing system and the purge is exiting clean. Production resumes, but the original defect still appears.

At that point, the troubleshooting process can move forward with an important piece of information:

Known contamination inside the cleaned processing path is less likely to be the immediate cause.

That does not identify the problem automatically. It narrows the investigation.

The processor can then continue evaluating other potential causes such as:

  • Material condition

  • Processing temperature

  • Residence time

  • Machine settings

  • Screw or component condition

  • Feed consistency

  • Downstream equipment

  • Application-specific process variables

PEKUTHERM® does not replace process troubleshooting. It helps establish a cleaner starting point for it.

When the Purge Reveals a Problem Area

There is another useful observation processors can make during cleaning. If contamination repeatedly appears during purging, or if material repeatedly hangs up in the same processing area, that behavior can become useful maintenance information.

PEKUTHERM® cannot tell an operator exactly why material is retaining in that location, but it can help expose the fact that material may still be present where it should not be.

That can give maintenance and process teams another reason to investigate:

  • Areas of material retention

  • Difficult flow paths

  • Component condition

  • Machine geometry

  • Recurring contamination zones

The purge does not perform the diagnosis by itself.

It provides information that can support the diagnosis.

Clean First. Then Troubleshoot.

Graphic: Clean First. Then Troubleshoot.

That is the central principle behind Tool 5.

Instead of:

Defect → Adjust → Adjust Again → Flush More Resin → Hope

a more controlled sequence is:

Defect → Clean → Verify → Establish Baseline → Troubleshoot

That sequence removes one major uncertainty from the troubleshooting process. If contamination was the problem, cleaning may resolve it. If the defect remains after a clean baseline has been established, the processor has better information for determining where to look next.

Tool 5 Connects the Entire Series

The five PEKUTHERM® Tools are not separate cleaning mechanisms. They are different applications of the same underlying mechanical principle.

Tool 1 — Material & Color Changeovers

Clean between production materials without depending on excessive incoming resin.

Tool 2 — Contamination & Carbon Removal

Mechanically remove degraded polymer, previous color and carbon buildup from metal surfaces.

Tool 3 — Preventative Maintenance

Clean before contamination becomes an unplanned production problem.

Tool 4 — Screw Pull & Maintenance Preparation

Mechanically clean before disassembly so maintenance starts from a cleaner condition.

Tool 5 — Cleanliness Verification & Diagnostic Use

Clean the system, establish a baseline and use that information to guide what happens next.

Different production challenges. One mechanical cleaning principle:

Self-Adhering. Thermoelastic. Mechanical Soft-Scouring.

PEKUTHERM® Is a Tool, Not Just a Consumable

A purging compound can be viewed simply as material that goes into the hopper and comes out of the machine.

PEKUTHERM® is designed to serve a broader role. It can help processors execute material and color changeovers, remove contamination and carbon buildup, support preventative maintenance, prepare equipment for a screw pull, verify machine cleanliness, and establish a cleaner troubleshooting baseline.
