It may be time for inspection, scheduled service, component replacement or a deeper mechanical maintenance event. At that point, the condition of the screw and barrel matters.


If degraded polymer, carbon buildup and residual material are still attached to the metal surfaces, the maintenance team may be pulling a screw that still needs substantial cleaning after removal.

Pulling a screw is already a significant maintenance event.


It can require:


  • Planned machine downtime

  • Screw extraction

  • Inspection

  • Manual cleaning

  • Reassembly

  • Restart and production verification


The objective should not simply be to get the screw out.


The objective is to make the entire maintenance event as controlled and efficient as practical.

What condition will the screw be in when it comes out?


If the screw is heavily coated with degraded polymer or carbonized material, the maintenance work does not end when the screw leaves the barrel. Cleaning still has to happen.

Over time, material can remain on internal surfaces.

  • Accumulate around flights and other surfaces

  • Become more difficult to remove manually


A scheduled screw pull may expose buildup that developed gradually during production.


That is why screw-pull preparation should begin before the screw is physically removed.


PEKUTHERM® as a Screw-Pull Aid


PEKUTHERM® cleans mechanically. During processing, the purging compound develops a thermoelastic, pencil-eraser-like consistency.


It self-adheres and forms a soft-scouring plug that physically works against contaminated metal surfaces as it moves through the processing system.
